What Changes When You Understand Your Nervous System?

Hello flourishing friends,
If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know I am all about the nervous system. Because when you understand what’s happening inside your body, you can start making different choices about how you move through your life.
Here are 5 shifts that can happen when you understand your nervous system:
1. You stop adding fuel to the fire.
You may have been taught or modeled that when you’re under stress, you’ll feel better with a glass of wine, some ice cream, or by simply putting your nose to the grindstone.
These are coping mechanisms—not regulation strategies.
When you understand that stress on the system is cumulative, you can start recognizing when your system already has enough on its plate. Instead of adding more burden to a system that’s already overwhelmed, you can choose behaviors that create space and make things easier on your body.
2. You learn to balance stress and recovery.
If you find yourself getting really motivated to work out, start projects, volunteer, or take on something new—only to end up injured, exhausted, or burned out—this one is for you.
Your nervous system is designed to respond to stress. But it also needs opportunities to recover.
Understanding this can change the way you approach your routines. Instead of constantly pushing until you hit a wall, you can start building recovery into the equation.
3. You can live with more intention, rather than reaction.
If you find yourself constantly racing around your life trying to put out little fires, stop.
You may be spending a ton of energy simply reacting to what’s happening around you.
When you understand how states of threat and stress can affect your brain and your ability to think clearly, you can begin to recognize when you need to pause before responding. That pause creates space, and in that space, you have more opportunity to choose your response instead of simply reacting.
4. You can start loving your body differently.
Pause for a moment and think about the things you say or think about your body.
Are you usually judging it? Disappointed in it? Frustrated with it? Wishing it would be different?
Sometimes we judge our bodies simply because we don’t understand why they’re behaving the way they are.
When you understand your nervous system, your body's responses can start to make more sense.
When things make sense, compassion becomes possible, and compassion can be the beginning of a very different relationship with your body—one rooted in appreciation rather than constant criticism.
5. You can actually feel better.
When you become aware of how your nervous system is working, learn tools to support regulation, and begin changing patterns that have been running on repeat, you create more opportunities to experience ease.
You can build more capacity for stress. You can recover more intentionally. You can become more aware of what you’re actually experiencing.
And you may simply find that you feel better in your body and in your life.
.
This is one of those blogs where you might read this and immediately think of someone else.
The friend who is always overwhelmed. The person who is constantly pushing through. The one who keeps saying, “I’m fine,” while clearly running on empty. The person who takes care of everyone else but has no idea how to take care of themselves.
If someone came to mind, send this their way. ❤️
I would love to help you understand, and partener with your nervous system.
Love always,
Dr. Ev
